The largest not-for-profit hospital on the United States west coast, Cedars-Sinai, has taken control of expenditure on doctors’ subsidized meals using Monitor’s card technology.
US cashless solutions specialist, SmartVend, has installed the Monitor system which gives doctors access to their monthly meal subsidy through their hospital ID card.
SmartVend’s Brian Kennedy says linking the doctors’ ID cards to point-of-sale terminals has meant administrators can close the gap between the doctors’ subsidy allocation and what was actually being spent.
“The hospital never knew how much money was out there to be spent on food at any one time.”
Around 500 doctors use the Monitor card system to purchase their meals. The system caps each doctor’s monthly subsidy, with any unspent amount accumulating.
“The hospital needs to know its exposure in meal subsidies,” Brian says. With the Monitor system, each meal purchase is recorded against the doctor’s account and can be viewed to track how their subsidy was spent.
Such is the flexibility of the Monitor system, the hospital can sell meal cards to other members of staff or the general public, removing the need for cash in the dining area. Management can also ‘shout’ a meal for nurses for instance, by providing meal cards as a gift.
